A Simulation-based approach to understanding the dynamics of the transition from product manufacturer into service provider
نویسنده
چکیده
Despite the demonstrated benefits of an extended service business in driving competitive advantage, most product manufacturers found it extremely difficult to manage the transition from a product manufacturer to a service provider successfully. In this context, we observed different phenomena. One phenomenon we term the “service jungle”. The “service jungle” describes the phenomenon that the transition has often led to declining business because of increasing costs, which could not be recovered with corresponding returns. Unfortunately, existing theory does not explain sufficiently the challenges inherent in this transition process. Transitioning from a product manufacturer to a services provider involves interactions among service management theories, basic concepts for improvement programs and human decision making processes in the firm while existing frameworks tend to address one at the expense of the other. To resolve the „service jungle“, we develop an integrative framework combining existing service management theories, the basic concepts for improvement programs with established theories on human cognition, learning, and organizational behavior. We then translate that framework into a formal model and analyze it using computer simulation. The analysis suggests a new construct the degree of integration among structural adoption, activityoriented adoption, behavioral adoption characterizing the dynamics of the transition. The construct provides an internally consistent theory about the dynamics of the transition. It shows how a low degree of integration can create the “service jungle” phenomenon.

Abstract In the dynamic and competitive market, managers seek to find effective strategies for new products development. Since There has not been a thorough research in this field, this study is based on a review on the risks exist in the NPD process and an analysis of risks through FMEA approach to prioritize the existent risks and a modeling behavior of the NPD process and main risks using s...
متن کاملModelling the Dynamics of Human Resources Capacity in Health Care Services A Case Study of Khatam-al-Anbia Hospital of Mashhad
Background: In service organizations such as hospitals, human resources (HR) play a key role in the quality of service delivery. Lack of a systemic attitude in terms of system dynamics, HR planning have been somewhat distant from reality. In order to solve such a problem, this study aimed to modeling the dynamics of human resources capacity management system in healthcare services. Material...
متن کاملMODELING RISK OF LOSING A CUSTOMER IN A TWO-ECHELON SUPPLY CHAIN FACING AN INTEGRATED COMPETITOR: A GAME THEORY APPROACH
In a competitive market, customer decision is made to maximize his utility. It can be assumed that risk of losing a supply chain’s customer can be defined based on products utility from customer point of view. This paper takes account of product price and service level as competition criteria. The proposed model is based on non-cooperative game theory, for one-manufacturer and one-retailer supp...
متن کاملA Trust Based Probabilistic Method for Efficient Correctness Verification in Database Outsourcing
Correctness verification of query results is a significant challenge in database outsourcing. Most of the proposed approaches impose high overhead, which makes them impractical in real scenarios. Probabilistic approaches are proposed in order to reduce the computation overhead pertaining to the verification process. In this paper, we use the notion of trust as the basis of our probabilistic app...
متن کاملGovernance, Government, and the Search for New Provider Models
A central problem in designing effective models of provider governance in health systems has been to ensure an appropriate balance between the concerns of public sector and/or government decision-makers, on the one hand, and of non-governmental health services actors in civil society and private life, on the other. In tax-funded European health systems up to the 1980s, the state and other publi...
